Petr Cígler
(*1978)
is a composer, horn player, chemist, and molecular designer. Though having no formal education in composition, he has devoted himself to it in collaboration with performers and festivals, for whom he writes music "made to measure." For him music counterbalances his vocation in science and inspires him for further work. He currently heads the scientific team Synthetic Nanochemistry at the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he conducts research in new pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostic methods. The two disciplines are connected in him on a more general level, and that is the discovery of the new. He is interested in organizing and manipulating sounds, working with acoustic phenomena, and he enjoys collaborating with skilled and enthusiastic performers, which gives him the opportunity to employ and to learn about their instruments in detail. His work includes orchestral and ensemble compositions for Ostravská banda, BERG Orchestra, and MoEns, and hisis music has been presented at festivals in the Czech Republic (Prague Spring, Ostrava New Music Days, Exposition of New Music), USA, Great Britain, Germany, and Switzerland. His composition Ueber das farbige Licht der Doppelsterne was commissioned by WDR / Köln am Rhein and premiered in a live broadcast on WDR 3, and his Entropic Symphony represented the Czech Republic at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers, 2013.
