Jan Dušek : Hungry Hearts
Suite from an incidental music for a silent film
Premiere: Spanish Synagogue, October 14, 2009
My approach to the film Hungry Hearts was to look at it as having peaks and valleys and then come up with music to underscore the important emotional moments in the story while at the same time supporting the “weaker” scenes. The main musical themes I identified were Jewishness and America. Episodic themes correspond with the main characters: for the elegant David Kaplan I wrote music for flugelhorn; the mean and miserly Rosenblatt is represented by bass clarinet; the beautiful Sarah has the color of the English horn or oboe. For this CD I chose only a few parts from the film score.
