Michal Rataj

(*1975)

focuses on the field of electroacoustic and instrumental music. In his work he respects the tradition of musique concrete, as well as absorbs the impulses from the current concepts of electronic manipulation with sound. For him, the key things are the different aspects of spatial sound and spectral transformations in real and surreal time. Rataj graduated in musicology at the Philosophical Faculty of the Charles University and in composition at the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, under the tutorship of Ivan Kurz (2003). He studied, worked and led research in the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria and the USA. Since 2000 he has been working as a producer in Czech Radio for the field of radio-art and was a member of EBU Ars Acustica. He is a sound performance artist and likes to work with sensors which track human motion. He composed a lot of music for television, film and radio. He runs international workshops focused on sound composition and teaches at the department of composition at HAMU in Prague and at the New York University in Prague.
