Jakub Rataj

(*1984)

has authored orchestral, ensemble, and electroacoustic compositions. His works overlap the world of sound installations and performances inspired by the human body – movement, breath, pulsation, and gesture. He is a member of the art collective OEM ARTS, an association of artists from the fields of sound performance, computer animation, and light design, collaborating as a guitarist and sound designer, using sensors for sound processing. His compositions were performed at many concerts and festivals in the Czech Republic and abroad (France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, China etc.). His work has been commissioned by the BERG Orchestra, Prague Modern, and MoEns, and he has collaborated with choreographers, film directors, and animators. He is currently a student at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under Hanuš Bartoň. He spent two semesters of residency at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris with Luis Naon, studying composition and new technologies. His teachers included Isabel Mundry, Frédéric Durieux, Yan Maresz, Yan Geslin, Oriol Saladrigues, and Tom Mays. In 2014, he was awarded with NUBERG Grand Prize for his piece Proraketon (For the Raketon – an instrument made by Czech visual artist Michal Cimala), which was commissioned by BERG Orchestra.
