Tomáš Hanzlík

(*1972)

is a composer and musicologist, artistic director of the Damian Ensemble as well as impresario of his own traveling theatre company, Theatrum Schrattenbach. A graduate in musicology and music pedagogy from Palacký University in Olomouc, since 1998 he has run the music festival BAROKO in Olomouc. Under his directorship, the Damian Ensemble performs, in addition to his own work, both old music and contemporary minimalist composers. In 2004, he presented the operas Yta Innocens, Torso, and Coronide as part of the National Theater’s Pounding on the Iron Curtain project, and La Nascita del Diamante as part of the Baroque opera and oratorio series initiated by the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK. He premiered in the Czech Republic the video opera Three Tales by Steve Reich in 2006. For a commission from the National Theater in Prague he composed Lacrimae Alexandri Magni (The Tears of Alexander the Great), which premiered in January 2007 at Prague‘s Estates Theater, and 2009 saw the premiere of The Labyrinth of Passion at the Moravian Theatre Olomouc. In addition to teaching, he is working on a critical editions of historical Czech music and is also active as a conductor, singer, and performer of string instruments.
