Jan Šikl On Meaning of Things
Premiere: Czech Museum of Music, June 11, 2012
The composition On the Meaning of Things made me think about the significance of my aims when I write music. I came to the conclusion that even when things don‘t turn out as I intended them to, everything serves its purpose, or at least it seems so….But I’m not always certain about it and I often realize that only in retrospect. In the end, the best thing for me to do, it seems, is to listen with an open mind and do everything to the best of my conscience. That makes sense for me. But often I can’t do it. I hope the title doesn’t sound too high-brow; my aim wasn’t to create a new branch of cosmology. All I wanted to say was that the music was created in a very subjective world, as a form of telling an abstract story.
